The Eighth Symposium on Diseases in Asian Aquaculture will be held in Mangalore, India 21-25 November 2011. The symposium is being organised by the Fish Health Section of the Asian Fisheries Society and College of Fisheries, Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Mangalore. The theme of the symposium is Fish health for food Security. In a series of scientific sessions across four days, internationally recognised keynote speakers will examine the current trends in aquatic disease in Asian and global aquaculture, disease loss, emerging diseases/area in health management, training and HRD issues. As the aquaculture industry has expanded, intensified and diversified, numerous aquatic animal diseases have emerged and become widespread as a result of global trade and modern transportation systems. Aquaculture products are also of animal health and quarantine concern.

The impact of these trans-boundary aquatic diseases on the industry and on society in general, will need to be mitigated by improving current levels of animal health management, bio-security, risk assessment, and epidemiology. Consequently, in addition to investigating the causative pathogens themselves, another critical task in the field of aquatic animal health is to effectively integrate and apply these diverse aquaculture-related management strategies for sustainable aquaculture.
